SR-4: California Delta Highway / Ebbetts Pass Road

California Delta Highway / Ebbetts Pass Road
Runs from I-80 in Pinole to State 84 near Markleeville

Highway 4 runs through an interesting cross section of California. Starting quite close to San Francisco Bay, it starts as a freeway in a fairly rural area, then various suburbs before crossing a portion of the California Delta as a two-lane road. It turns into a freeway briefly in Stockton before once again becoming a two-lane roads on its trans-Sierra journey. State 4 passes through Gold Country, through towns such as Angels Camp and Copperopolis, slowly climbing the mountains. The road crests the Sierra Nevada at Ebbetts Pass, at 8730′, then quickly drops to the Carson River where it ends at State 89. Hwy 4, as a signed route, used to go up to Woodfords where it met State 88.

Christie UP (28-0039) before the other side of the freeway was completed. This was built in 1925.
End of the road, in winter.
